The Road to DC Universe Rebirth: The Black Canary and Titans

Hello, Fellow Book Worms and Book Dragons,

The effects of the return of the Pre-Flashpoint Superman were just the beginning. Elsewhere in the New 52 Universe, the tales of one woman's journey away from the super hero game began kicking and screaming. And the broken memories of the former Teen Titans were triggered when a deadly foe from the past returned. Highlighted areas denote my review links.

Black Canary: Songs for Broken Gods and Superwomen

You don't become a member of Barabara Gordon's super-group for nothing. Former Bird of Prey Dinah Lance had gone through quite a lot in a short period of time. It all culminated to a fight with Batgirl, and the loss of all of her crime fighting equipment in a major fire. Confronting Gordon and helping her with removing a dangerous AI from the world (Batgirl #35-40), Dinah parted ways amicably from her former team mate. In a daring twelve issue series of her own by writer, Brendan Fletcher and artist, Annie Wu, Dinah toured with the band, Black Canary. Under the name DD (AKA Dinah Drake), she looked to remove herself from the super hero life. But when her guitarist, Ditto, is pursued by dangerous forces, she must use her powers to defend the band.

DC Comics decided to flesh out this series a bit more by releasing an EP from Black Canary. Fronted by Caveboy vocalist, Michelle Bensimon, and backed by Brendan Fletcher's former band, the Receivers. It was a haunting and electric three track hit that had fans wanting more. With the sounds of Black Canary in readers heads, the path was paved for the series Batgirl and the Birds of Prey Rebirth.

Titans Hunt and a Flash from the Past

Having grown up reading the Teen Titans and New Teen Titans, I was disappointed when the New 52 universe acted as if the team had never met. We had Roy Harper off with Red Hood. Donna Troy opposing Wonder Woman as Queen of Themyscira. Dick Grayson as a super-spy for Spyral. Garth seemingly at war with humans. And Wally West...wait...where is Wally West?

The adult Teen Titans returned in an eight issue mini-series by writer, Dan Abnett and artist, Paul Pelletier. It also brought back the original Teen Titans' later comrades to defeat a malevolent presence that was hell-bent on destroying the world. When the original Titans, Roy Harper and Dick Grayson began to flashback on times they never lived, their world got even stranger when a presence began to manifest itself in their lives. But only former Titan, Lilith, knew for sure who the dark Mister Twister is.

Regaining some memory the original Teen Titans began to converge on Hatton Corners to delve into why they are remembering things that never were. As Mister Twister's influence began to infest the heroes, a memory of a time past emerged. Mister Twister had taken possession of the Teen Titans to build him an construct that would usher into our world a demonic force. To defeat Twister and never have the construct used again, the Teen Titans were forced to erase memories of being a group. Once again the heroes banded together to stop the villain from finishing his plan. But after defeating Twister for a second time, the team realizes that they have not remembered everything, including a unidentified member. The series ends with a storm that produces a lightning strike. This would continue in DC Universe Rebirth #1.
