The Thrifty Book Buyer: Free and Cheap Reads

Image
Hello, Fellow Bookworms and Book Dragons,    The best feeling a reader can have is finding that new and amazing book that takes them on new adventures. But sometimes when that cash register serves up the total, it is a feeling that can be unpleasant. What does a book reader do when the books are not affordable? I have a few options that have served me quite well over the years, as well as some new tricks I have discovered. In this article, I will share with you great ways to save cash, and still, get those books you desire.     1) The Library- This is a great first step in obtaining newer books that you wish to read. This option is great for the reader that does not wish to collect a series but just read it. Most library catalogs are available online for you to search for titles. In many of the online catalogs, you will have an option to request a title. That way when the book you wish to read is available you will be notified, and you can pick i...

Worst Love Interests in Books

Image
Hello, Fellow Book Worms! The search for love in novels can be quite a daunting task with evil-doers, scoundrels, and creepers abound. But true love does happen on occasion, but when it goes wrong it can be catastrophic. Here is my list of the worst love interests in books.   Worst Love Interests (possible spoilers ahead) 1.     Opie from the SilverBlackthorn series by Kerry Wilkinson- I have been enjoying reading the Silver Blackthorn series. In this trilogy our main character is torn between two boys: Imrin and Opie. Imrin is infinitely stronger a character than Opie, and often I feel Opie can be a bit whiny. In book three readers will finally see who she ends up with. I hope it is Imrin. He is a lot more interesting a person than Opie.    2.   Jack Torrance from the Shining by Stephen King- How can you not add this man to this list? Jack is an abusive alcoholic who has harmed his young son in the past, and has li...

Book Review: The Exorcist by William Peter Blatty

Image
Hello, and welcome fellow book worms! For #22 (A book your mom loved) of my 2015/2016 Reading Challenge I decided to read The Exorcist by William Peter Blatty.   In 1973 my mother delivered a one year old me to my grandmother as she and my father went to the local Palace Theater to watch a movie. That movie was the Exorcist directed by William Friedkin. It was based on my mother's favorite book at that time, and she was anxious to see how Hollywood had treated it. The buzz for this film had dubbed it "the most terrifying film ever made". There were lines around the corner to see this movie, with many people camping out all day to see what the buzz was about. Security guards tamed the crowds, while ambulances removed people from theaters who either became ill or passed out during the film. This excited my mother, a huge fan of the horror genre. She could not stop talking about it for weeks, and saw it twice.   When I was in high school ...

Book Review: Dashing Through the Snow by Mary Higgins Clark and Carol Higgins Clark

Hello, Fellow Book Worms and Book Dragons!   To celebrate the coming of Spring I returned to Christmas with my latest book that I read- Dashing Through the Snow by Mary Higgins Clark and Car ol Higgins Clark .      Since 1995 Mary Higgins Clark has been celebrating the Christmas season with her series of holiday novels. Each one has taken her readers on a suspenseful trip into the world of crime. Beginning with Silent Night , this series of books have been bestsellers many times over. But it was not until 1998's All Through the Nigh t that Clark began to tell holiday tales with her popular characters, Alvirah and Willy Meehan (first introduced in 1987 in Weep No More My Lady). But things really got interesting in 2000's Deck the Halls when Clark teamed up with her daughter, Carol Higgins Clark, to introduce holiday stories featuring the two authors' most popular characters, Alvirah Meehan and Regan Reilly. Many adventures later Dashing Through the ...
