Comic Book Review: Flash Rebirth #1 by Joshua Williamson and Carmine Di Giandomenico

Hello, Fellow Book Worms and Book Dragons!

DC Rebirth has arrived. And in week two we have been given a lot of great comic book reads to enjoy. I decided to collect a couple of weeks worth of books, and sit down and read them. The third book in my reading journey is the Flash. This issue runs simultaneously with DC Universe Rebirth #1. If you have not read that issue, it is a good idea to pick it up before reading this issue.

In Flash Rebirth #1 we find Barry Allen at the scene of a crime that is not unlike the night his mother was murdered by Professor Zoom. He is trying to be the best CSI he can be, but he is shaken by the similarities of this new case to his mother's case. He begins to hallucinate, seeing images in lightning, as if the Speed Force is speaking to him. But it is not until he meets up with Wally West, the original Kid Flash, that he realizes that something is very wrong.

Wally explains to him that a force has shifted time itself, and has created a new reality (the New 52) that has many of the DC Universe dealing with holes in their memories, or completely re-written lives. Barry is told about Flashpoint, which he does not remember, and the letter he gave to Batman written by Thomas Wayne from another reality. He tells Barry to visit Batman to see what the Caped Crusader knows, while Wally heads to find his fellow Teen Titans. They both set off (Wally's story continues in Titans #1). What Batman and Flash discover deepens the mystery of who is watching them and why. Plus we see the first appearance of a new villain for the Flash!

This issue was a tour de force of great writing and vivid artwork. Joshua Williamson provides a solid script that is peppered with nostalgia. While the art team of artist, Carmine Di Giandomenico and colorist, Ivan Plascencia pair very well with the narrative, moving it along at lightning speed. It was a very enjoyable issue that had me wanting to read more. Thankfully Flash is now released twice monthly, which will help with my impatience.

DC Comics currently has all the right creators at the helm. I am beyond pleased with the reverence that the creators have shown for the many years of comic fandom that exists. This issue, like the ones that I have read, is a wonderful gift to their readers and fans.
