Thursday Thrillers: 3 Truths and a Lie by Lisa Gardner
Hello, Fellow Book Worms and Book Dragons,
3 Truths and a Lie is written by Lisa Gardner and is part of her D.D. Warren detective series. It takes place prior to Find Her and finds Detective Warren and her husband, Alex, in Wisconsin, attending a writer's camp for suspense authors. They are there to deliver seminars to the writers in order to separate fact from fiction, explaining police investigation in the real world. D.D. wants to attend a few of the technical school's events, most of all the SWAT Team training course. The problem is that D.D. believes that her seminar will not be half as interesting as Alex's seminar on blood splatters.
Warren decides to wow her crowd, which includes Suspense authors Joseph Finder, Kathy Reichs, and Karin Slaughter, with a case that she feels will stump and wow her crowd of eager writers. Before beginning her hour-long case study, Detective Warren tells her audience that she will present three truths and one lie. It is the duty of the writers (and the reader) to detect what is fiction and what is fact.
The case: a naked man covered in blood and missing one of his legs is found in a motel room dead. There is no footage on the motel cameras showing a second person entering the man's room. And the only people seen near the room are the motel manager and the first-responding police officer. But some of the man's belongings are missing, and his leg is in the room's bathtub. If no one entered or exited the room during the event of his death, then how is he missing possessions? Why would someone amputate his leg? And is the motel manager selling something other than rooms at the motel?
This short novel by Lisa Gardner does not disappoint. Regardless of length, it is a smooth ride through a very difficult mystery. It is filled with twists and the final reveal had me smiling because I had no idea it was coming.
I read 3 Truths and a Lie with the audiobook narration of Kirstin Potter. She delivers a fun and interesting performance of the story that one must hear. I love her work on this series.
If you are looking for a short mystery that will make you think hard to solve the crime, then this is for you. I gave 3 Truths and a Lie four out of five stars.
