Friday Funnies: Shockaholic by Carrie Fisher

Hello, Fellow Book Worms and Book Dragons,

Shockaholic is written by Carrie Fisher and published by Simon and Schuster. It relates often funny and sometimes sad stories of those who have been a part of Fisher's triumphs and disasters. This memoir takes the reader on a journey through many years of the actress' life, that includes her introduction to super-stardom in 1977, with Star Wars. We also witness a face-off between Fisher and Ted Kennedy, the life of Michael Jackson through her eyes, and her complicated relationship with Elizabeth Taylor (just do not stand by the edge of a swimming pool with Taylor behind you!).

Carrie Fisher's life is not just presented to those who wish to read a Hollywood memoir, but also to those who have struggled through addiction, and delivers a reoccurring message of strength. Through scandals, marriages, and a galaxy far, far away, Fisher took her life's story and turned it into a funny and moving book.  But her journey was made easier (and problematic at times) by her relationship with her father, Eddie Fisher. Amidst his tabloid stories, multiple marriages, and drug abuse, Carrie's relationship with her father remained a loving one. I was touched by this part of the book, and so will anyone else who has cared for a sick parent.

Shockaholic is filled with an honest and often poignant journey through Hollywood. Fisher reads her memoir in the audiobook, and it is a joy to hear in her own words. I laughed hard and often.

I gave Shockaholic five out of five stars.
