From Screen to Page: The Secret Diary of Laura Palmer by Jennifer Lynch with Sheryl Lee

Hello, Fellow Book Worms and Book Dragons,

On October 1, 1990 the Secret Diary of Laura Palmer was released to millions of Twin Peaks fans worldwide by Pocket Books. Written by Jennifer Lynch (daughter of David Lynch) this disturbing account of the final years of Laura Palmer's life was released in diary format. It was sold out quickly and gave fans the chance to try and solve the mystery of her murder. In 2017 the third season event on Showtime sparked renewed interest in Twin Peaks. Actress Sheryl Lee reprised her role as Laura Palmer in the audiobook edition of this classic Twin Peaks book. And of course, I had to listen.

The Secret Diary of Laura Palmer spans over five years beginning with a twelve-year-old Laura and ending at age seventeen. It is a tragic and often horrifying account of sexual abuse, drug addiction, and the longing one has to return to simpler times when life has gone horribly wrong. We are introduced to fan-favorite characters from Twin Peaks through Laura's eyes, giving us a window into the lives of Twin Peaks' infamous cast. Her relationship with Margaret Lanterman (the Log Lady) is particularly sweet and genuine. And Laura's description of BOB is chilling, giving the entity an even more sinister voice. Once again we are pulled into the underbelly of this sleepy, little town, and what we find are nightmares.

The Secret Diary of Laura Palmer was always a favorite of mine, but Sheryl Lee's narration gave this book an entirely new dimension. Lee seduces the reader with her soft and often sultry voice, lulling us into the false sense of security that Laura was feeling page after page. She expertly grabs the listener and holds on often to frightening levels when BOB appears in Laura's mind. The twisted and sad life of Laura Palmer makes not only an excellent read, but it is a must for Twin Peaks fans who wish to fill in the story of this tragic homecoming queen.

I highly recommend this book in audiobook format. Sheryl Lee's performance is top-notch and riveting. I am happy that this book could finally be read by the actress who brought Laura Palmer to life. I gave the Secret Diary of Laura Palmer four out of five stars.
