Plot Twist Fridays: The Wife Between Us by Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen
Hello, Fellow Book Worms and Book Dragons,
The Wife Between Us is Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen's debut collaboration and is published by St. Martin's Press. In this tense thriller, we are introduced to Nellie and Vanessa. Vanessa is bitterly divorced and is seemingly angry at Nellie, who is about to marry her ex-husband, Richard. Stalked by the ex-Mrs. Thompson, Nellie goes about her daily life as a preschool teacher. She is a bubbly and happy woman with lots of friends. Vanessa is a part-time Saks Fifth Avenue employee living with her aunt and coming down from her extravagant life with Richard. The two women live on opposite sides of Manhattan. Two sides of a coin that is about to collide.
Vanessa has many tales to tell the future, Mrs. Thompson. Tales of abuse, both mental and physical. Tales of infidelity. Tales of suspicious behavior. But will Nellie listen? Or will she dive head-first into a terrible mistake? Can she deal with the wife between her and her future husband?
Full disclosure. I am writing this review as vague as I can because the crazy plot twists in this novel need to be presented without spoilers. The Wife Between Us delivers a narrative that is sneaky with often gasp-out-loud moments. What you believe to be reading can change any minute and characters that you have trusted may not be as trustworthy. This book is a pretzel twist with cinnamon and sugar. It is sweet-smelling and when consumed, is an extreme pleasure not expected. Reading this book for me was so enjoyable that I read it within a day. It also delivers a finale that was so satisfying that I sat back and was shocked.
I read The Wife Between Us in part with the narration of actress, Julia Whelan. Whelan has narrated many of my favorite books. And her performances are always very well done. She has an excellent grasp of voices and her reading style is suitable for 1.25x speed. She delivered an entertaining performance that accentuated the authors' words amazingly well.
The Wife Between Us is a taut thriller that was five stars all the way. It is filled with tension and twists. It is the perfect book to end a reading slump and keep you up most of teh night.
