Chills & Thrills: Hide and Seek (Criminal Profiler #1) by Mary Burton

Hello, Fellow Book Worms and Book Dragons,

Hide and Seek is written by Mary Burton. It is published by Montlake Romance, an imprint of Amazon, Inc. In this fast-paced thriller, we are introduced to FBI Special Agent Macy Crow. After surviving an attempt on her life, Crow has worked hard to rehabilitate her body and return to the FBI. She fears that she may not be up to the task of returning, but she knows she must do her best. She is sent to Deep Run, Virginia to work with law enforcement on a cold case after the remains of a missing girl are discovered. In 2004 young Tobi Turner's disappearance was never solved. With a string of assaults and a few more missing girls in the surrounding area, Crow is certain there is a connection.

When she arrives in Deep Run she is reunited with an old flame, Sheriff Mike Nevada. Together they move forward with their investigation, much to the chagrin of former sheriff Hank Greene. Greene lost to Nevada in the last election and is bitter, working hard to cover up his past malfeasance. A game of hide and seek is initiated and their UNSUB remains ahead of their steps. And with a growing body count, Crow is determined to work through her physical pain to bring justice to the families of those abducted. When one of Nevada's deputies is taken by their mysterious killer, he and Crow are thrust into a game of cat and mouse. With the clock ticking who will rise triumphant?

Hide and Seek blended crime, romance, and suspense quite seamlessly. All of Burton's characters were likable and her villain was multi-layer. I loved Crow and Nevada's interactions. They made an excellent team and I enjoyed their romantic banter. The clues were laid out in a way that mislead me at times. This proved to drive the story forward in a surprising way. When the finale finally arrived I was surprised by the outcome, which to me makes a great mystery story.

Christina Traister returned to narrate this novel. I loved her work on Burton's Forgotten Files novels. She does not disappoint with this presentation. With excellent dramatic reading and alternate voices and accents, Traister brought Burton's words to life. I hope she will be reading more Mary Burton novels.

A five-star read with a lot of twists. Hide and Seek gave me a day's worth of suspense that ended in an exciting and surprising finale. The narrative was tense and filled with excellent characters, leaving me wanting more. It is never a bad thing to add a Mary Burton novel to your Summer Reading. You will not be disappointed.
