Cozy Summer Reading: Crank up the Air Conditioning

Image
Hello, Fellow Book Worms and Book Dragons,     I read a lot of books in the Summer months. I find that I can nestle in my reading area with some snacks and a drink as the AC chills my space. This allows for hours of non-interrupted storytime that I can really get into. I love beach reading, too. But there is something to be said about avoiding hundred-degree days in the AC.    When I think of cozy Summer reading I think of long series that span many books that keep me engaged for hours. I also like middle-grade books, because they remind me of when I was a kid reading my favorites from Lois Lowry, John Bellairs, and Beverly Cleary.    Cozy time reading can be done in bed, in a favorite chair, or under a shade tree. It also gives you the option of getting lost as you journey through your new literary world. The possibilities are endless. And let's not forget that this is when we have book fai...

Thursday Thrillers: The Omen by David Seltzer

Image
Hello, Fellow Book Worms and Book Dragons,       The Omen is written by David Seltzer (who also wrote the screenplay for the film) and was published in 1976. Currently, it is published by Dreamscape Media. In this tale of religious terror, we are introduced to Jeremy Thorn. The Economic Adviser to the U.S. President, Thorn, and his wife, Katherine, have tried to balance their family life enough for a child. After failed pregnancies, Thorn is approached by a priest and is asked to take in an orphan child recently born. Without letting Katherine know that their latest child has died, he welcomes little Damien as their newborn son. It is not known to Thorn that the child he has brought into their life  is the son of the  devil .   Years pass and Damien grows into an adorable little boy. Quiet and often kept to himself, he is not close to Katherine. Thorn is away and sees him rarely. But their staff, Mr. and Mrs. Horton are there to offer their view on h...

One Person Theater: My Favorite Audiobook Narrators

Image
Hello, Fellow Book Worms and Book Dragons,     Let me offer you a scenario:   It's the middle of the month, and you are in the worst reading slump of your life. You have no time to physically pick up a novel and read. Then you decide that if you cannot read a book visually, why not try an audiobook? Your search is successful for the audio production of the book you wish to read and start it. But the narrator's voice annoys you. Their speaking is like nails on a chalkboard. You fear you are back to square one. What do you do?   I have been in this very situation many times. However, all narrators are not bad. Here is my list of narrators that are, in my opinion, the best at bringing a book to life. Each week I will share a favorite of mine. First up:   Marc Thompson:  currently narrating several of Del Rey's Star Wars novels, including Dark Disciple, Aftermath, and A New Dawn. Thompson has a great knack for voices, and conveying character emotion...

What Would You Do?: DNF Reasons

Image
Hello, Fellow Book Worms and Book Dragons,      DNF or Did Not Finish. What would you do if a book is not engaging, stop reading? If so what are your reasons? Here are mine: Romance - I can take this in small doses. But when a love story interrupts the main narrative, it can be distracting.  The Main Protagonist Changing - I have seen this happen many times. The author feels they wish to take their characters and put them in new situations. But the issue with this is that the character may act completely out of character. That makes me feel that the previous books I have read were for nothing. A Sequel That is Worse Than the Original - When I get excited for the next book in a series, I expect it to be better than its predecessor. I have read sequel books in a series that have been horrible. I feel as if someone else wrote it, or the author was really going through some tough times in their personal life.         As you ...

Young Reader Favorites: Star Wars: Smuggler's Run by Greg Rucka

Image
Hello, Fellow Book Worms and Book Dragons,     Star Wars: Smuggler's Run is written by Greg Rucka and features beautiful artwork by Phil Noto.  In it, we first meet up with Han Solo in a cantina, named Serendipity. He is listening in on a conversation between several bounty hunters at a table behind him. Of course, when they start talking about fast ships and the fabled Millennium Falcon, old Han has to give his two cents worth to the conversation. He regales them with a little-known tale of the Millennium Falcon.    After the famous medal ceremony in A New Hope, Han And Chewbacca prepare to leave Yavin IV. Before they can leave the planet, Princess Leia requests their presence at a meeting.  She informs the duo that Ematt, Leader of the Rebellion's special recon team, has been ambushed and his team eliminated.    Han and Chewbacca's mission is to travel to Cyrkon, a toxic planet that protects its residents with domes and shi...
