Reading Outside Your Normal Genre

Hello, Fellow Book Worms and Book Dragons!

Reading outside of my usual genre of mystery and thriller happens on occasion. When I go for something different, I look for historical fiction or middle-grade books to read.

Historical fiction, I find, can be a great alternative when choosing a different genre, I enjoy the mix of history, drama, and sweeping stories. Gone with the Wind by Margaret Mitchell classically covers this in a grand way. I plan on re-reading that novel since it's been at least 26 years since I read it the first time. The Goldseer Trilogy by Rae Carson is also another excellent series. Walk on Earth a Stranger is one of my favorite middle-grade books of the past five years.

A lot of children’s chapter books offer contemporary stories and family-driven comedy that helps a great deal with reading slumps, as well. I purchased a lot of Beverly Cleary books recently not only as nostalgia, but to help break up my reading schedule. Ramona Quimby by Cleary is a hysterically funny series of books dealing with a little girl’s misadventures from ages four and up. It also crosses over into the Henry Huggins series.

I also never tire of reading middle grade. Many new and dynamic authors have joined the middle-grade authors of the past, including Tomi Adeyemi, Marie Lu, and Marissa Meyer. These authors have changed the genre and have ushered in many new readers. Kelly Barnhill’s magical fantasy novel, The Witch’s Boy, is filled with everything a lover of witches and wizards enjoy. And of course, we cannot leave out the Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling, which has taken the world by storm. I read the Sorcerer’s Stone, Chamber of Secrets, and The Prisoner of Azkaban and loved them. I am hoping to complete reading that series this year.

When you think about, reading outside of your genre is many times a good idea. It breaks up a lot of the subject matter that you are taking in when you read. I, for one, need a break from the horror, blood, and guts that many suspense novels have. Never underestimate the power of a new experience.

Have fun reading this week. Let me know in the comments below what you are reading this week.
