My Top 5 Star Wars Canon Books

Hello, Fellow Book Worms and Book Dragons!

With Rogue One: A Star Wars Story in theaters now, I decided to share my Top 5 Star Wars canon novels that I have read thus far. Each book will have a link to my full review attached to the title.

  1. Lost Stars by Claudia Gray- Hands down the best Star Wars canon book I have ever read! It begins years after the Clone Wars, and travels through the original trilogy with ease. Thane Kyrell and Ciena Ree are two children of different classes on the planet of Jelucan. After an encounter with Grand Moff Tarkin at an early age, they strive to be Imperial officers. This young adult novel takes us on their journey from children to teens to that fateful day after the destruction of the planet Alderaan. Ciena and Thane make choices that ultimately pits them against one another as one of them joins the Rebellion. This book offers the beginnings of storylines that also tie-in to the Force Awakens. The climactic battle on Jakku at the end explain quite a lot about the planet's current ship graveyard that Rey scavenges. Also many original trilogy characters are featured in this book, including Princess Leia and Darth Vader.
  2. Lords of the Sith by Paul S. Kemp- This novel tells the story of Hera (Rebels) Syndulla's father, Cham. He has assembled a team of Rylothians to do the impossible: kill Emperor Palpatine and Darth Vader. When the Lords of the Sith are traveling on the same ship together, Cham and his Rebel team set out to crash the Star Destroyer that they are on. This novel plays out like an epic feature film. Darth Vader is vicious in this story, and features one of the most breathtaking exhibitions of Force ability I have ever seen a Sith perform. Vader is truly terrifying in this book. Strap into your X-Wing and enjoy teh ride of this amazing read!
  3. Battlefront: Twilight Company by Alexander Freed- Set in the gritty, war-torn regions of space, this war novel takes us into the ranks of Twilight Company. This band of Rebels (mainly ground troops) travels through the parts of the original trilogy. They are protecting an Imperial defector by the name of Evari Chalis, who is being pursued by Darth Vader. Chalis has information that could be helpful about the Kuat Shipyards that build Imperial ships such as Star Destroyers. The action is astounding and when they finally meet Vader on Hoth during the Empire's assault on the Rebel base, the encounter is rather terrifying. We are introduced to both sides of the Galactic Civila War with Thara Nyende. As a Stormtrooper on Sullust, she believes that the Empire is just in many ways. But she soon learns how cruel the Emperor's officer's can be. Also fan-favorite Nien Numb is featured. If you loved the realness of Rogue One, you will love this novel.
  4.  Bloodline by Claudia Gray- Taking place seven years before the Force Awakens, this novel takes us into the political world of Star Wars. Claudia Gray returns to Star Wars and it is glorious. It was written with aid from Rian Johnson, the director of Episode VIII, and features several characters that will be in the next film. We see Leia Organa dealing with a split government as she runs for the office of First Senator. But when her identity as Darth Vader's daughter is revealed by the mechanization of an enemy, she is thrust into a plot against the New Republic. Filled with amazing action and political intrigue, this novels is a meaty dose of Star Wars that will leave ramifications on the canon for years.
  5.  Weapon of a Jedi by Jason Fry and Phil Noto- Taking place shortly after A New Hope, Luke Skywalker travels to Devaron and discovers the Jedi Temple of Eedit. It begins in the Force Awakens-era with pilot, Jess Pava, listening to C-3PO relate a story about Skywalker that he and R2-D2 were present for. It is an excellent middle-grade novel with ties to the Clones Wars and to the Force Awakens. Loads of hints as to what future Episode films will hold.
