Traveling with Audio Books This Summer

Hello, Fellow Book Worms and Book Dragons!

How would we ever get along as book lovers without that awesome Summer Read? Whether mystery, contemporary, science fiction, or young adult, publishers are always releasing some awesome books to enjoy at the beach.

But how do you read your books? For me, Summer can be very noisy. It can be a hard task to enjoy a book when activity is buzzing around you. I enjoy my Summer Reads with an audio book accompaniment. Many digital books are now matched with audio books as either a deal for buying a digital book, or as a sale. Audible has a deal with its parent company, Amazon.com, to pair up their digital Kindle books with audio books via Whispersync. This allows seamless pairing of the audio and written narrative.

But bear in mind, and audio book can either make or break a book. I have been listening to audio books for many years. I have collected for you five of my favorite narrators that will not ruin books, in my opinion.

  1. Marc Thompson- Thompson narrates many Star Wars canon novels for Del Rey, and Disney-Lucasfilm. His smooth transition between voices will have you wondering if Harrison Ford and Ewen McGregor are part of the cast. Voice impersonations are a specialty of his, and he does them very well. His narration of the Force Awakens novelization is pure genius.
  2. Jonathan Davis- Davis has narrated many Star Wars novels for Disney-Lucasfilm and Del Rey. His Darth Vader is chilling, and he can switch between impersonations very quickly. His reading voice is evenly toned, and very soothing at times to listen to. A favorite read of his was last year's Star Wars: Lord of the Sith. He took Paul S. Kemp's epic novel and raised it to new levels. I ended up reading that book in two sittings because of Davis.
  3. Lorelei King- You cannot hear the name Janet Evonovich and not think of Lorelei King. She has narrated many books in both Evanovich's  Stephanie Plum and Wicked series. Her comedic narrations will have you laughing so much you may need air. She expertly delivers character voices that range from children to elderly asthmatics to many different accents. Her voice is calming and uplifting, with a twinkle of mischief. I have never read a book with Lorelei King that I did not love.
  4. Will Patton- I read Stephen King's Doctor Sleep (the Shining 2) with Will Patton's narration last year. I found that he seems to embody the characters of Stephen King rather well. With a raspy, often gravely voice, he is easy to listen to. I love his transitions between older and younger characters. He often reminds me of those men we all have in our neighborhoods. You know, the one who sit on their porch and spins tales of their adventures of the past. When they tell you a story, the world seems to disappear.
  5. Kat Rose-Martin- Narrating the Silver Blackthorn series by Kerry Wilkinson, Kat does a marvelous job bringing the characters of this Dystopian trilogy to life. She has a brilliant grasp of characters and their motivations, and delivers their lines with great emotion. I enjoy her accent, which brings forth the authenticity of the story. She is currently working on the audio book for Resurgence, the third book in the Silver Blackthorn series.
As for getting audio books, there are several ways to do so. But my two favorite ways are to buy them when they go on sale on sites, such as Audible. And I love to check them out of the library. Many libraries have audio books that you may borrow online, or they will have physical copies at their location. They can be downloaded to your phone or tablet for easy use anywhere you may travel.

Whatever way you decide to get your audio books, you will be amazed on how an audio edition can enhance a book. Many audio books are full cast, have special effects, and music. Enjoy your Summer with an awesome new book!
