Tuesday Series: Hideout (Alice Vega #3) by Louisa Luna

Hello, Fellow Book Worms and Book Dragons,

Hideout is the third Alice Vega thriller written by Louisa Luna and is published by Doubleday Books, a part of Penguin Random House. In it, we are introduced to UC Berkeley student-athlete, Zeb Williams. In 1981, Williams bolted from the football field and kept running, never to be seen again. For decades, people have wondered what could have possessed the student to simply give up everything and disappear. Wealthy client, Anton Fohl is one of those people. He hires Alice Vega to find Williams and end the mystery of his vanishing act. Vega takes on the challenge, wanting to include on-again-off-again partner, Max Caplan. But their relationship is strained lately and they rarely speak. But with a bit of intervention by Cap's daughter, the two reunite with a layer of tension between them.

Max agrees to help Alice with the Williams case in part since he has his own cases. The two separate and begin to investigate. But when Alice begins to ask questions in Williams' hometown, she is met with a dangerous group who does not like her involvement. As she continues, Alice uncovers more about the small town than just a football player's disappearance. And it is that discovery that may get her killed.

Hideout was a fun and tense ride through small-town secrets and dangerous online groups. Alice was in plenty of danger as she navigated through decades of hidden agendas. She and Max's chemistry was heightened and it was amusing watching this couple who are obviously attracted to one another skirt around the subject. This made for some tension-breakers that helped the narrative along. I loved how Luna combined two seemingly separate cases into one and made me feel uneasy that any character could die at any time. All this led to a crazy finale that saw yet another reveal.

I read Hideout in part with the narration of Tavia Gilbert. As always, her smooth voice and flawless transition between voices made for an excellent read.

I gave Hideout four out of five stars. It was great to dive into another Alice Vega thriller. If you are looking for a series with a strong female lead, this series is for you.
