Thursday Thrillers: The Red Mother by Jeremy Haun and Danny Luckert

Hello, Fellow Book Worms and Book Dragons,
Journeys within the realm of horror are a favorite of mine. I love a good, creepy read with lots of scares and atmosphere. Thankfully I began to get on the hype train for Boom! Studios' new series, The Red Mother. I had heard a lot of great things about it and decided to give it a try. Bundling issues one through five together, I sat down and was hooked immediately.
The Red Mother is written by Jeremy Haun with gorgeous artwork by artist, Danny Luckert. It is published by Boom! Studios monthly as part of their horror comics. In this story of bended reality and possession, we meet Daisy McDonough. Daisy is living a great life with a career she enjoys, great friends, and a boyfriend that makes her happy. But one night walking home from dinner, she and her boyfriend are attacked. With the swipe of a sharp object, Daisy loses her right eye and her boyfriend is nowhere to be found. After weeks of therapy and isolation, Daisy begins to re-emerge into the world one step at a time with the help of a therapist. She is also the owner of an artificial eye that helps to aesthetically balance her features.
Her best friend tries to reach her, but Daisy is still a bit shaky for company. After some coaxing, she enters the world unemployed, but optimistic. Daisy has a a long way to go before she feels safe, but she is strong and pushes on. She is also being pursued for a position in London by a mysterious benefactor, named Leland Black. He uses her expertise a problem solver to generate interest in his venture. All of this begins to tie Daisy to a new life and opportunity. Then she is seemingly hunted by a creature that appears to her in waves of blurry, red visions. When she is confronted by the monstrous creature, she is informed that a demonic force is after Daisy. That force is the Red Mother.
The Red Mother was a very well-written tale of terror. It lays down a slow-burn story that introduces us to the main players and delivers scares throughout. I enjoyed Daisy's character and how strong she was regardless of the odds that were against her. Haun also introduces side characters that may or may not be on Daisy's side. Whatever the Red Mother is, she has agents everywhere and is willing to use Daisy's loved ones against her.
The first five issues set up a fantastic story filled with thrills and chills. Five stars later, I look forward to learning more about the Red Mother and her Herald. This is a fun way to spend a Summer afternoon or to save for your Halloween reading.
