Book Review: Goosebumps- The Haunted Mask by R.L. Stine

Hello, Fellow Book Worms and Book Dragons!

For the spooky Halloween season, nothing gets me in the mood for ghosts and goblins quite like Goosebumps. R.L. Stine's fun and scary stories transcend age and have captivated millions of readers. Last year I read the Scarecrow Walks at Midnight and absolutely loved it. This year I am reading a few Goosebumps for the season and Spookathon.

The Haunted Mask is written by R.L. Stine and is published by Scholastic Books. Released for the first time in 1993, this eerie tale of Halloween hijinx introduces us to Carly Beth Caldwell. She is small of stature and the brunt of many jokes from her peers. After eating a worm at school after she is pranked, Carly is fed up. Even at home, her annoying little brother is constantly a thorn in her side. She feels that things need to change. Her best friend, Sabrina, does her best to help Carly Beth out with bullies Chuck and Steve. But the situation is not letting up, especially at Halloween time.

When she decides that she will scare Chuck and Steve instead of being the victim, she heads to the local costume shop to buy herself some revenge. When she arrives she finds the shop closed. Desperate to get a mask creepy enough to scare her rivals, she pleads with the owner to let her in. She has her life savings of thirty dollars with her and she is ready to spend it on a quality mask. Left alone to search, she goes further into the store and enters the back room. There she finds many scary masks that she knows will terrify Chuck and Steve. The store owner denies her request to buy one of the masks. She pleads further and finally gets the mask. As the Halloween night descends upon her neighborhood, Carly Beth is set to scare the school bullies. As the night continues Carly's personality begins to change. Her voice is menacing and she is stealing candy from other kids. She is changing and needs to get her mask off. Only... it will not come off!

The Haunted Mask was a fun time that had all the Halloween vibes. I loved the cast of characters and enjoyed the various Halloween references. Carly Beth was a cute character that made me feel bad for her. Even when she was being taken over by the mask, she fought to stay herself. She realized that she was turning into a bully and did not like that. Chuck and Steve were your typical bully-type. While Sabrina added her best friend status well to the storyline. In the end, the finale was exciting and gave us a great twist on the good vs evil story.

I read the Haunted Mask entirely with the narration of voice actress and comedian, Jorjeana Marie. Her range of voices was fantastic in this story. From annoying little brothers to other-worldly voices, she delivered a wonderful performance that had me listening to this book in one sitting. I look forward to hearing more books read by her.

The Haunted Mask was a spooky four-star read. It made me even more excited for Halloween. I enjoyed the story and the characters. This book proves that Goosebumps books are for all ages. Have yourself a fun time this Halloween with the Haunted Mask.
