In Her Tracks is the eighth book in Robert Dugoni's widely popular Tracy Crosswhite series. It is published by Thomas & Mercer, an Amazon imprint. In this latest thriller, we find Tracy Crosswhite dealing with the terrifying events of A Cold Trail. Her PTSD is slowly being managed, and she is preparing to resume being a lead homicide detective. But Tracy finds that during her leave of absence, her boss has given her position away. She has a choice to either go home or work cold cases being left by retiring detective, Art Nunzio. Her decision is made when her former partner, Kinsington Rowe, asks her to help him with the disappearance of a young jogger in the area. It is a case that mirrors two cold cases that Nunzio left behind.

As Tracy works on the missing jogger case, she is also swept up in the disappearance of a five-year-old girl from half a decade ago. It is a case that seems to have been mismanaged since the girl's father was a member of the police force at the time. Tracy begins to be immersed in the lives of the four cases, leading to a trio of brothers that have a deadly past and an even deadlier present. As Tracy walks in her tracks, will she suffer the same fate as the missing jogger?

In Her Tracks delved deep into the inner workings of PTSD management and its effects on those it touches. Dugoni peeled back another layer of his fantastic character, as Tracy worked hard to balance her memories of her dead sister and her fight to be in the now. It was a fast-paced novel. And it also managed to slow down and look into the mind of someone broken from the past, but hopeful for her future. The four cases she worked on in this book cleverly tied three of them together. The antagonists were sadistic and added tension to the narrative. The twists were swift and the final reveal had me in disbelief. There was also a lot of heart in the story, as well. I was moved by one scene at the end that had me tearing up.

Actress Emily Sutton-Smith returns to narrate the audiobook. Her work on In Her Tracks was an excellent performance for each character. She also had that sense of urgency that brings each nail-biting situation to life. I highly recommend Sutton-Smith as a narrator and I actively seek out her works.

Dugoni has returned again to deliver a five-star read. Thrillers like this are to be savored and re-read.
