Plot Twist Fridays: Daisy Darker by Alice Feeney
Hello, Fellow Book Worms and Book Dragons,
Daisy Darker is written by Alice Feeney and is published by Flatiron Books, an imprint of Macmillan Publishing. In it, we are introduced to Daisy Darker, a woman with a rather quiet life. She is a volunteer at an aging home and has faced several near-death experiences due to a faulty heart. Her family is a fractured bunch that only cares about themselves and rarely contacts her.
Her grandmother, Beatrice Darker, is the exception. And on October 30th, Daisy and her family are invited to a birthday celebration for the elder Darker on an island. It's business as usual, with Daisy's family ignoring her. Her niece, Trixie, has taken to align herself with Beatrice, noticing the shallow ways of her own mother and relatives. She is pleasant to Daisy. As the birthday celebration nears, a reading of the will takes place which infuriates the family. The next few hours continue as each family member is found dead. With the causeway to the island washed out, there is no escape. Can Daisy figure out who is murdering her family before she is next?
Daisy Darker was a fun read with a claustrophobic and mysterious air about it. I enjoyed the book's format, which traveled back in time via VHS tapes to present the Darker family's history. The deaths were particularly brutal in nature and the killer's knowledge of the family had me looking to everyone as a suspect. But it was the insane twist at the book's end that had me in shock.
I read Daisy Darker in part with the audiobook read by actress Stephanie Racine. Her narration was intimate and emotional as she tackled the first-person narrative of Daisy. An excellent performance.
I gave Daisy Darker four out of five stars. It was a great way to pass the time and had me guessing until the crazy plot reveal. This is a great Winter read that needs a blanket and a cup of cocoa to accompany it.
