Book Review: The Guy Who Died Twice by Lisa Gardner

Hello, Fellow Book Worms and Book Dragons!

  While I wait for what seems like a million years for Lisa Gardner's new book to arrive, she has graced our reading peepers with a new short novel. I loved 3 Truths and a Lie, the 4th Man, and the 7th Month. Each short novel gave me more of Gardner's characters as I got ready for her latest full-length thriller. In 2019 she has not disappointed.

  The Guy Who Died Twice is Lisa Gardner's fourth short novel. It is e-published by Dutton Books, an imprint of Penguin Random House. In it we are brought into the home of Sergeant Detective D.D. Warren and her family, husband Alex and son Jack. After putting her son down for the night the happily marrieds sit on their sofa and D.D. regales Alex with the story of her latest strangest case (yes, she has had a few). 

  Apparently a man by the name of Adam LaToile walked into the police station where Warren and her team reside, claiming to have information about a homicide. Of course he was fetched quickly and delivered to the team. But his information is on himself. Claiming to be already dead, he proceeds to ramble on. D.D. and her team hear him out. But the incoherent nature of his visit leaves them confused. Then he is gone and no one knows what to think. But a few hours later a phone call comes in and sure enough Mr. LaToile has been found dead in his bed, with a knife in his back. Present at his residence are his chauffeur, cook, doctor, gardener, maid, manservant, and wife. Who had the motive to drive knife into LaToile's back? Why did he believe he was already dead? And how do the LaToiles get their shortbread cookies to taste that good?

  It is an Agatha Christie-style whodunit. And no one is leaving the library until D.D. gets her killer.

  The Guy Who Died Twice was a fun little story with a big plot. It traversed the globe from Brussels to Paris to the United States, giving the reader wonderful little mystery to solve. I had a lot of fun reading Warren and her team interact. And Gardner made sure to offer up as many "Red Herrings" as possible. I had a great time trying to solve this case, and loved the reveal at the end. This definitely brought a smile to my face, since I love reading D.D. Warren thrillers. I gave this novel four out of five stars.
