Thriller Review: None of This is True by Lisa Jewell
None of This is True is written by Lisa Jewell and is published by Atria Books. In it we are introduced to the Netflix Documentary Series, My Birthday Twin. It tells the tale of murder, psychological torment, and it is loaded with twists. The series is based on the podcast by Alix Summers of the same name. In this series she interviews a woman named Josie Fair. She is troubled and in a horrible marriage. Her daughters are as damaged as she is and one has run away. The series gains momentum and Alix Summers becomes a viral star leading to the docuseries.
But it takes many hours of interviews to get this story. And in the end no one is telling the truth and two people are dead.
I should have known by the title of this book that I was in for a crazy ride. Jewell once again crafts a layered thriller with domestic suspense. No one is a reliable source of information. Each tale told is retold from a different perspective, leaving the reader excited for the next chapter. As foreshadowed in the prologue, this book went fast and in the end I had read almost 400 pages in a single sitting. In the end I was left with a finale that exploded from the heat of the prior chapters.
This experience was enhanced by the full-cast audiobook that came with music and sound effects. This version contained a bonus chapter that sets up a sequel and twists the narrative even further. In comparison to the audiobook, the hardcover novel had more descriptive parts when it came to the Netflix interviews. The audiobook left those elements out of the story. The audio presentation was read by Kristin Atherton, Ayesha Antoine, Louise Brealey, Alix Dunmore, Elliot Fitzpatrick, Lisa Jewell, Thomas Judd, Dominic Thorburn, Nicola Walker, and Jenny Walser. This cast was an excellent addition, giving an already exciting novel more edge with their reading.
None of This is True was a five-star read that I would say is a contender for my favorite read of the year. It was fast-paced and filled with page-turning characters. The finale was an anxiety trip that I was happy to ride. This is a perfect reading slump destroyer. And a great add to your TBR.
