Book Review: Murder in and Irish Pub by Carlene O'Connor

Hello, Fellow Book Worms and Book Dragons!

Murder in an Irish Village, Murder at an Irish Wedding, and Murder in an Irish Church Yard were each filled with fun and often eccentric characters that always managed to get into mischief. They were a delightful read that fueled my love for cozy mysteries. But the fourth installment in the series delivered a more serious mystery, as our beloved characters have grown into themselves and their new careers.

Murder in an Irish Pub is written by Carlene O'Connor and is published by Kensington Books. In this fourth installment in the six-book series, we are once again whisked off to the village of Kilbane, County Cork Ireland. The O'Sullivan six are engaging in rocky relationships, puberty, and a new career in law enforcement. Siobhan O'Sullivan is neck-deep in family affairs and over-seeing a poker tournament in an official capacity as a local Garda. The pub is jammers as the star player, Eamon Foley, battles his rivals in a high-stakes game that has all of Kilbane waiting on bated breath. A fight breaks out, a game is called for fraud, and the next morning Eamon Foley is found hanging from the rafter of a rival pub.

Eamon's pregnant widow is beside herself. Fans are organizing a memorial. And Siobhan does not believe that Eamon committed suicide, regardless of the suicide note found with the poker phenom. Siobhan and her love (and superior at work), Macdara Flannery, begin to investigate foul play. As the investigation gets into full-swing the duo realizes that the poker players and their families are all looking quite suspicious. Enter Nathan Doyle with the Dublin Guard, who is on the hot pursuit of a jewel thief that may have targeted Kilbane. With this extra help, will Siobhan and Macdara find Eamon's killer? Or will they be dealt with the dead man's hand?

Murder in an Irish Pub was a fantastic escapist romp through the beautiful countryside of Ireland. O'Connor did a wonderful job aging up her cast and delivering some storyline resolutions from past books. I enjoyed the poker tournament and its shady cast of characters. The event changed the people of Kilbane in some humorous ways. We were introduced to new shops and their owners. While visiting some past citizens, getting updates on their stories, as well. The mystery was done in a spectacular "whodunnit" fashion that ended with Siobhan cornering all her suspects to reveal the truth.

Caroline Lennon returned to narrate the audiobook. Her fun and whimsy narration style added a lot of depth to the tale. I particularly love her reading of Siobhan's family. Since book one she has given us each one a voice that has matured over the years. Excellent work once again.

Murder in an Irish Pub was a four-star book that left me wanting another visit to Kilbane. O'Connor's writing style is fun and delivers a great mystery each time. This was a great way to enjoy a cozy mystery.
