ARC Book Review: Renegade by Kerry Wilkinson

Hello, Fellow Book Worms and Book Dragons!

Renegade is the second book in the Silver Blackthorn Series by Kerry Wilkinson. I received this book as an advanced reader copy (ARC) in June by St. Martin’s Press. It tells the story of a king’s rise to power and the sixteen year old girl who defies his cruel and unjust rule. Taking place minutes after the original book, Reckoning, Renegade takes us on a first-person journey of survival with Silver Blackthorn as our guide.

Having survived atrocities at Windsor Castle in a futuristic, dystopian England, Silver leads several other teens that were chosen in the Reckoning as “Offerings” for King Victor to freedom. Imrin, Pietra, Faith, and Hart are among the few that have escaped and now follow Silver along the countryside of England. Dodging Kingsmen (King Victor’s soldiers), villagers (there is a handsome price on Silver’s head), and the elements, the team search for rebel cells that may help in in the fight to reveal to the public just what their king really is: a maniac. During their journey they encounter a lot of white-knuckle moments that will have you almost tearing your book in half! But Silver is a resourceful girl and she knows exactly what to do to get her team out of trouble. Although strong, she is still a sixteen year old girl in desperate need of a normal life. She misses her home and her love, Opie. But her reputation has formed a myth around her that everyone sees as the leader of the rebellion against King Victor. Renegade is filled with sweeping locals, amazing villains, and non-stop peril that makes this book zip along a great pace. All leading to an incredible cliffhanger that will have you wanting more!

I did not read The Reckoning, but I had no trouble following the story. Wilkinson has a great habit of reminding you about the first book throughout the pages in crafty ways. This is beneficial for those who have read the first book who do not want a rehash of the The Reckoning. I loved the book’s science fiction roots that always brought technology into the mix. This is a great book for fans of strong heroines. Silver Blackthorn will not only be on the lips of those who seek to destroy her, but on your lips, as well. I found her hard to get out of my head. I gave this five out of five stars!
