Comics Review: Batman '89: Echoes by Sam Hamm & Joe Quinones

   Batman '89: Echoes is written by Sam Hamm (writer of Batman and Batman Returns) with art by Joe Quinones. It is published by DC Comics. In this six-issue series, Hamm asks the question: What if Warner Brothers continued Tim Burton's vision for future Caped Crusader films?

  Batman '89: Echoes picks up a year after the events of Shadows. Batman (Michael Keaton) has vanished. Barbara Gordon (Wynona Ryder) is now running the Gotham PD. And a notorious fire bug, Firefly, has been apprehended and sent to Arkham State Hospital. Robin (Marlon Wayans) has become Nightwing, leading a group of local crime fighters (and secretly in touch with Batman). In Arkham, Firefly is greeted by Dr. Jonathan Crane (Jeff Goldblum). Crane clashes with Dr. Harleen Quinzel (Madonna) about treatments being held in Arkham.  

  Quinzel is working to have her own television talk show with TV producer, Chuck Lantz (Harvey Fierstein). She will do anything to be a TV star and quit Arkham. Lantz wants Quinzel to reveal Firefly's true identity in order to get her show. When a prison break occurs at Arkham, Quinzel is caught in the crossfire. Left on her own by Lantz, Harley Quinn is created.  

  Batman '89: Echoes was a fun "what if?" for the DC Universe. It included actors from the early 1990's that would have been considered for roles if this script had become a film. It captured the zany antics of Harley Quinn and delivered a scary version of Scarecrow. Barbara Gordon's Batgirl appears, wrestling with the practicality of a suit of armor where the head doesn't turn. And Alfred Pennyworth (Michael Gough) delivered some humorous moments. Plus, we also meet The Riddler (Martin Short) and Blockbuster (Arnold Schwarzenegger) in Arkham.

  Five Stars later, I left this series very satisfied. This sequel had larger set pieces and an extended cast. As a fan of Tim Burton's Batman, I loved every moment of this series.

  Hello, Fellow Book Worms and Book Dragons,     I have been speaking with other readers about how they read. For some, they only read an e-book. For others an audio book on the way to work saves them time. But then there are readers like myself that take it a few steps further. I utilize many forms of reading when taking on a book. Reading Slump? Or Research Triumph?

Hello, Fellow Book Worms and Book Dragons,    April is seeing A lot of research and editing for my  debut novel . Of course, this is great news that I am nearing the end of finishing my book. But with all of this nonfiction reading, I have moved away from fiction.
