Book Review: The Silent Corner by Dean Koontz

  The Silent Corner is written by horror/ suspense author, Dean Koontz. The paperback edition is published by Bantam Books, an imprint of Penguin Random House. In this first novel in the Jane Hawk series we are introduced to the FBI Agent, currently dealing with the apparent suicide of her husband, Nick. After investigating his death and a growing suicide epidemic, Jane is contacted by shadowy figures who threaten her life, as well as her son, Travis'. Afraid for her five year old's safety, Jane goes off the grid, and travels cross country to friends on the West Coast. There she deposits her son at their compound for his well-being. With a secret organization driving people to kill themselves and others, Jane sets out to find the truth behind them. But what she finds is a conspiracy so deep within the government and law enforcement, that she no longer even trusts her FBI brothers and sisters to watch her back. Soon she is branded a rogue agent and is pursued by an unlikely assassin. Will Jane be able to stay one step ahead of her adversaries. Or will she perish in the silent corner?

  I received this complimentary novel from Bantam Books in return for an honest review. I had been introduced to Jane Hawk through the audio book, Bone Farm. Within the confines of that short novel I left with a desire to immediately read the Silent Corner, which I did. Jane Hawk is an agent, mother, and wife on a mission. She is bold and takes risks that she knows may not work out in her favor. Her training has kept her alive in the years she was an FBI Agent, and she appreciates the psychology of the human race, which she weaponizes to her advantage. Her clever use of her surroundings to further her investigation and keep herself living was extraordinary to behold. Just when I thought that she was about to meet her end, I saw that she was several steps ahead of her enemies. The book moved forward with the speed of a bullet train. And ended with a tension-filled finale that wrapped up the storyline, and added nuggets of what is to come in the remaining novels of the series. 

  I read this novel in part with the returning voice of Elisabeth Rodgers. Her use of accents, elevated reading, and dramatic presentation gave this book a new dimension. I marveled at how fast the book sped by with her narration. I am happy that she is the narrator for the rest of the series. Excellent work!

  In the end the Silent Corner was a four star read for me. It was an exciting beginning to a series that had me wanting more. The danger, adventure, and cleverness of Jane Hawk was a wonderful addition to the crime and suspense genre. I look forward to the remaining books in the series. If you love an exhilarating novel that leaves you hungry for more of the main character, then the Silent Corner is the perfect Valentine's gift to yourself! Enjoy.
