Comic Book Digital Codes: Are They Worth It?
Wednesday, new comics day. No other day in the life of a comic book fan is more important (other than Comic Con) than staking out your local comic shop and getting the newest releases. I have been a patron of comic book shops for over twenty five years, and I admit that I never grow tired of snatching up the latest releases. But lately there has been a debate within the comic book industry about digital codes.
Recently Marvel Comics received a lot of bad publicity when they changed what digital content was available with the code included with their comics. Up until the beginning of April 2017, you could download the digital version of the print book you had purchased to your Comixology account. But Marvel decided to change the digital content to three random books. Yes three books are better than one, but they were books chosen by Marvel. This left digital collectors up-in-arms over the decision because they wanted to collect the digital copy of the book they had purchased. Marvel heard the fans loud and clear. Starting in May the digital copy of the book you purchase will once again be included, as well as an extra book.
Marvel's decision prompted DC Comics to enter the digital copy game with some of their Rebirth titles. This upped the cost to $3.99 for a few books. But the digital copy can be linked to your Comixology account via your Amazon.com log-in. Now readers of both industry giants can carry their books digitally where they go. But are digital comics worth it?
My answer is yes.
I am a fan of my tablet. I carry it everywhere and usually read books, magazines, and comics with it. I have hundreds of downloaded books and audiobooks in my tablet's memory, and I always have one open to enjoy. The prospect of carrying a long box of comic books with me is a hernia-inducing thought, which makes carrying a three pound tablet all the more desirable. Having digital content readily available is easier for those of us who travel a lot. I still love printed books, but when convenience is the subject, digital will always win with me.
I am off to read some more comics.
