Book Review: Folklords by Matt Kindt and Matt Smith
Hello, Fellow Book Worms and Book Dragons!
Just the words "Once upon a time" can get any reader's imagination going. Where will you go? What adventure lies ahead? We have been escaping into fairy tales all of our lives.
But what happens when you are living in a fairy tale and do not know it?
Folklords is written by Matt Kindt and illustrated by Matt Smith. It is published by Boom! Studios in single issues or graphic novel format. Taking on the world of the fairy tale is young Ansel's lot in life. For eighteen years he has waited for the day when he and those his age will stand before the village and announce their quest. In this land, the vicious Librarians rule. They tell everyone what to do and punish those who oppose them. Ansel is also strange. He dresses in business suits. He speaks of tall buildings and horseless carriages. He has seen a world that his people do not understand. But he is determined to prove its existence. Ansel is joined by his friends Archer (an elf) and Demure (an older girl with a steely presence). Ansel has decided that he will leave his village in search of the fabled Folkords for his quest.
When the Librarians arrive on quest day, his declaration is intercepted by Archer. The young elf does not have a quest and steals Ansel's, leading to the Librarians banning this year's quests. Anyone venturing away from the village will be executed for disobedience. Ansel does not take this well and sets off regardless, armed with visions of a strange world. What he finds is a greater mystery that may lead him to places he never thought possible.
Folklords is a clever and often funny journey that never disappoints. This was my first taste of Kindt's writing style and I loved it. Folklords is loaded with whimsical characters and grand adventure. The world-building was excellent and the character development was surprisingly good. It was a series about coming of age and testing the waters of adulthood. Smith's art style is simple and filled with great characterization. He particularly captures the character Ugly rather well. Her quest to kiss everyone in the land to end the curse of her appearance is one of the funnier aspects of the story. Even the Librarians are drawn as foreboding wraiths of darkness. The combination kept me reading the entire series, culminating in a finale that had me smiling from ear to ear.
This series is five issues of four-star goodness that had me wanting more. I will definitely seek out other books by Kindt and Smith. This is a great way to relax and lose yourself in the magic of comic book fantasy.
