Book Review: Fear Nothing by Lisa Gardner

Hello, Fellow Book Worms and Book Dragons!

The year of 2018 is fast becoming the year of Lisa Gardner for me. I have read and reviewed several of her books in the past couple of months. And her addictive novels have had me up into the wee hours of the morning sacrificing sleep and sanity. Her non-stop thrill rides are enough to warrant a Xanax and a hug from someone that will tell you everything will be alright. Lisa Gardner is relentless with her twisty tales that seem to get under my skin and into my head. And with that said, I have devoured another of her thrillers.

Fear Nothing is written by Lisa Gardner, and it is the 7th book in her best-selling series featuring Sergeant Detective D.D. Warren. We are quickly pulled into a grisly case that appears to be the work of a serial murderer, dubbed the Rose Killer. This macabre psychopath is leaving almost pristine crime scenes even though his (or her) victims are flayed postmortem. This is very similar to what notorious killer, Harry Day, did to his victims forty years prior. But Harry is long dead, as well as his accomplice wife. But Harry is survived by Shana Day, a famous murderer in her own right, and her psychiatrist sister, Dr. Adeline Glen. Adeline was born with rare condition that does not allow her to feel pain. For this she has been just as much a prisoner of her own body as her sister is a prisoner of the state.

One night Detective Warren decides to visit the crime scene of one of the Rose Killer's victims. But during her inspection of the home, she is ambushed by the mysterious killer. This results in the detective falling down a long flight of stairs. Many weeks later, D.D. is badly injured, on extended leave of absence, and cannot remember some of that night's events. Dr. Glen is recommended to Warren as the psychiatrist that can help D.D. regain some of her sanity, as the detective is having a hard time dealing with bed rest. Since Warren is the kind of law enforcer who always clocks in long hours and never rests until a case is solved, this incapability she is facing is maddening. Adeline does her best to help Detective Warren, but she is dealing with a stubborn patient.

Soon the Rose Killer is connected to Harry Day's past crimes, making Adeline more than a doctor to D.D.. She is a walking talking crime file of her father's past deeds, and with her knowledge of and access to old case files, she joins the investigation. But Adeline's sister, Shana, wants to help, as well. She makes a bargain: a twenty-four hour furlough from her now thirty years of incarceration. In return she will lie in wait for the Rose Killer, whom she believes is targeting Adeline next. In Shana's mind the daughter of a notorious serial killer, who just happens to not feel pain, is the perfect victim for a deranged killer who seems to idealize their father.

But can Shana be trusted? Is Adeline the Rose Killer's next victim or is it Detective Warren? And what deadly secret from Shana's past holds the key to solving this latest rampage?

And the question still remains: when one cannot feel pain, do they Fear Nothing? Dr. Adeline Glen is about to find out.

This book was a crazy and wild ride. I was truly invested in the complex and entertaining story of the Day sisters and their family's legacy. Gardner delivered an excellent array of characters that drove the story swiftly throughout Fear Nothing's almost five hundred page exciting tale. It sailed along with a narrative so addicting that I could not put this book down for several hours. Each plot was carefully embedded in my mind as I read on, and I was faced with many moments of disbelief. What I admired most about this story was Dr. Adeline Glen. Her story was often very sad and very moving, which demanded the reader's sympathy.  Although the character would never welcome such a reaction. She was a strong and determined woman who, despite her sister's crimes, still loved Shana and wanted the best for her older sibling.

I also enjoyed Fear Nothing with the audio presentation read by long-time Lisa Gardner narrator, Kirsten Potter. As always it was an amazing journey with Potter's acting skills at their best. Her delivery of all of Gardner's characters was done with pointed and expert skill. Whether she read a Boston detective, psychotic murderer, or prominent psychiatrist, she never failed to bring grand theater to Fear Nothing.

As always I was not disappointed in Lisa Gardner's ability to offer up a highly entertaining thriller. I gave Fear Nothing four out of five stars. An excellent mystery.
